Apart from the progress in Geography teaching and D.Phil. research works, the Central Himalaya (popularly known as Uttarakhand Himalaya) has immense scope for investigation of the physical, cultural, economic and environmental dimensions. It is no exaggeration to say that almost 90 percent of Uttarakhand Himalaya remains unknown to academic lenses. The Geographical investigations are mostly confined to ‘areal’ frameworks, which may accommodate different orders of river catchments and administrative units. There can’t be any limitations on themes, be it an areal framework as a unit of study or the nature of data itself. In the absence of any comprehensive guidelines, D.Phil. research works in current scenarios are highly unorganized and deficient in meaningful values with few citation and references in academic and developmental realms. The Geographical Society of Central Himalaya (GSCH) aims to provide a platform for geography-centered academic interactions among faculties, scholars, stakeholders in development as well as representatives on respective issues in the government. Since most of the educational institutions in Uttarakhand are supported by public funds so it is expected that there must be some return to society

Uttarakhand State, having seen two decades since its separate formation, still strives for comprehensive policies relating to the economic development, environmental conservation, management of resources and well being of its people. The mountains of Uttarakhand are suffering from rural-urban migration, depopulation, economic deterioration, environmental disasters among others. The GSCH aims at improving the academic atmosphere committed to Geography on a disciplinary level on one hand and strives for practical applications such as suggesting government on issues of development and environmental conservation etc.
